Control: The Art of Letting Go (Just a Little)

Because Who’s Really in Charge Here?

What do we actually have control over?

This question hits especially hard in a world that feels increasingly chaotic. But instead of spiraling, I do what I can—which mostly means attempting (and sometimes failing—because you can’t have growth without a little failure, right?)—to keep my home in order.

• Clearing the stairs of my children’s stuff—a Sisyphean feat.

• Keeping the dining table clutter-free—a Sisyphean feat.

• Convincing my family that I am not, in fact, their personal assistant—a Sisyphean feat.

If you need a good laugh, I highly recommend giving this (Magic Coffee Table Video) a watch.

What You Do Have Control Over

The reality? We can only control ourselves and our reactions.

And when you share a home with other people—kids, partners, roommates, the occasional ghost of clutter past—this becomes even trickier. Because people need to be responsible for their own stuff.

So, what can you do?

• Clean up after yourself. If you got it out, put it back.

• Set clear expectations for the people you live with. Boundaries are key!

• Let go of the idea that you have to manage everything.

If you’re raising kids, you know the struggle. But by preschool age, little ones can start contributing. They can:

• Put their toys away (with gentle reminders, of course).

• Bring their dish to the kitchen counter.

• Help load the dishwasher (even if their idea of “helping” is questionable).

These small steps build autonomy, responsibility, and—eventually—a home that doesn’t feel like it’s always one unfinished cup away from total collapse (no offense to anyone in particular, of course.

The Myth of a Perfectly Organized Home

Let’s be real—nobody has it all together. (And if they say they do, they’re lying or secretly shoving everything into a closet before guests arrive.)

It’s okay to have a junk drawer. I actually have a sort later pile, a beautiful basket in fact. I clean it out regularly, but when people come over—everything goes into the basket and voilà! Instant illusion of complete tidiness.

That’s not cheating. That’s practical magic.

Too Much Stuff = Too Much Stress

If your home feels overwhelming, ask yourself:

• Do I have too much stuff for my space?

• Would I be less stressed if I had less?

Revisit that basket once the guests leave and see what you can let go of from the pile because its just well…clutter.

Decluttering isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about mental space. And sometimes, having “Enough.” means recognizing that you don’t need more.

To help with this mindset shift, I’ve created a free 7-day guide to stepping into the headspace of Enough. It’s not about deprivation—it’s about deciding what truly meets you where you want to grow toward.

How to keep an Organized Home

Flexibility is Key (and So is Chocolate)

Sometimes, life forces us to adjust. My family recently had to adapt to life without eggs (a challenge when you don’t eat meat). But guess what? We managed. Here is a quick video egg-free cooking hacks for baking in case you ever find yourself in a similar spot.

The point? Be flexible. With your space. With yourself. With others.

And most importantly—be kind to yourself.

If that means hiding chocolate around your house like a squirrel burying nuts? No shame. (I do it, and now over 400 of you know.) I especially love Divine Chocolate and have worked with this cooperative FairTrade Brand a lot in the past. Additionally, they empower women and their chocolate is exceptional.

Keep going. Keep decluttering. Keep creating a home that works for you—not against you.

And in the wise words of one of my favorite self-help gurus: Caitlin Murray @BidTImeAdulting says, “Get yourself a snack.” I’ll add, preferably dark chocolate. Because, epicatechin.

And if you’re still feeling overwhelmed it’s okay to ask for help. Let me support you to getting your home into the energetic oasis that you desire.
