A Message of Inspiration

Before I do anything else I want to tell you how excited I am to be taking an incredible course this fall that Olivia Bowen is offering for entrepreneurs. “Join a group of soul-centered entrepreneurs on a 6-week journey to revamp your business on level: we’ll dig into mindset, mission, money, marketing — and those are just the Ms!” To learn more, connect with this link. The Thrive Experience.

I am thrilled that so many of my clients and developing their businesses in new directions and that so much of this energy work has so many great returns. Abundance comes to mind. We have SO much. Dare I say that we have, Enough. I am looking forward to sharing a brand new offering with you soon but for now, I will just say that I am feeling an outpouring from the universe that I am on the right path.

This is a tumultuous time for many of us either because of our health, the political climate or the climate in general. I am focusing my attention on supporting each other on the grassroots level and growing in not only my understanding but my outlook as well. Remember what you can change. I often find that I tell my children, you cannot change how you feel but you can change how you respond. At this inflection point I hope that we all choose thoughtfully what we do have control over and that we too take oportunitues to grow.

As 2024 continued, I found that I was still working through a lot of anxiety. (See previous paragraph) I tend to work through these feelings through art and with nature. I have also curated my social media feed with uplifting and inspiring posts. I also check in with myself often and recognize that if I am not feeling good about my consumption that I need to consume less or consume something different. I hope that this will help you too.

What are you doing with your work, offerings and products as we move through the heat of summer into the cool refresh of fall?

I’m excited to collaborate with you on your upcoming product launch, service introduction, and the development or enhancement of your website. Together, we can forge impactful connections, tell compelling stories, and have a positive influence on the world.

Tom & Heather - National Arboretum - Washington, DC - Family Photography

I love working with Tom and Heather with each passing year, from finding new places to showcase their beautiful family to seeing little Henry and now Harper grow. But I am always impressed with their wardrobe. I often point new clients to my recent photographs of their family for what to wear the day of their session.

Patterns and Textures Not everyone can bolster stripes but Tom rocks this sweater and having Harper in polka dots really creates a theme. To balance the family out Heather and Henry are in solids. This plays nicely but it’s not overly matchy. Jeans tie everyone together and also bring depth to black and white photographs. Also I kept these in color because the foliage at the the National Arboretum is outstanding.

Details Jewelry like a wedding and engagement ring are often the focus when taking a portrait. For example, I had posed them with Heather on the opposite side but wanted to capture her ring to focus on their marriage which is something as parents we often have intentionally bring back into focus. Once children enter our lives so much energy, time and love is bestowed to them so taking a portrait of just the parents allows for the reconnection between them. I once photographed Heather wearing a Shinola Watch and it was so prominent in the portrait (We both coincidentally originally hail from MI where Shinola is based) that I felt the shot could have been a Shinola ad.

Autumn Colors Bright colors pop during this time of year. It is nice to see this mustard against the muted and varied colors of the trees. Red, orange, Yellow, Purple, Teal and Blue look nice during this time of year also though I tend to prefer a warmer palette. White also allows for the pop against the colors in the Fall foliage.

Shoes Not many people think about shoes but it is clear to me that Tom and Heather do. This is a detail that families occasionally overlook thinking that they may not have their feet in the shot. But as you can see from the images, shoes are often prominently featured so putting forward your best kicks is highly recommended. And unless we’re meeting on even ground for an engagement session leave the heels at home and they may get stuck in the grass and make it difficult to cover ground.

This session is from last November. I am excited for our next one!

INTRODUCING A NEW MUSE - TIPS ON PHOTOGRAPHING INFANTS

Every photographer now and again experiences this moment when they log into the back end of their website to sit down and create a blog post that is long overdue.

(one week old)

(one week old)

In January of this year after a long and hard pregnancy this joyful and calm being entered our world right on time. The older sibling, almost four now, is stubborn and precocious and proud. This one however, is a blank canvas and has become my latest muse.

This little being and the one that came before are who I have spending my time with and why the blog has been so quiet. But now, while they are both asleep and in bed (I hope) I will share some simple tips on photographing babies.

(3 weeks old, above right) and (3 months old, top right and bottom left)

Be Patient At one week they sleep so much, so take advantage of that. Have your client nurse their baby before you attempt to pose them and understand that babies although they are fairly flexible, are also incredibly unpredictable. I always build in an extra half hour at least for crying and cooing and changing,,,and then, changing again.

Natural Light I prefer window light as this natural light provides a natural warmth for the body's skin tone. I also enjoy prime lenses like my 50mm or my 35mm lenses which allow for sharp focus and a large FStop. But in a tight space it can leave you with little space as you are your zoom moving backward and forward toward your subject to frame the shot.

Attention Once the baby is 3 months old you may start getting some smiles or laughs. Babies will generally smile when you smile at them at this age. You can have mom or dad stand behind you and talk to and smile at the baby or even shake a rattle.

Mock Studio You can use a Boppy or a blanket rolled up under another blanket to prop up a baby. I ofter set up in whatever room has the most available light and it is often not the nursery.

Textures are amazing! My philosophy is that babies are simply a blank slate and have fine delicate details so adding in a beautiful intricate blanket or quilt can add in some color in a snap.
