Enough. Starts at Home

The process of decluttering begins in the very space where you live and relax—your home. Over the past month, I've been focusing on cleaning out my own closets, emptying my cupboards, and even sorting through my file cabinet. These small, manageable tasks have brought so much clarity and peace, and I want to help you experience the same.

Start with Your Closet:
A great first step in organizing your home is tackling your clothes closet and accompanying dresser. This can be a powerful starting point because it’s often a space filled with items that no longer fit your style or align with your needs. Start by identifying clothing you no longer wear—whether it’s because it doesn’t fit, is out of style, or just doesn’t bring you happiness.

Decluttering Tip:
Take everything out of your closet and lay it on your bed. This will allow you to see exactly what you have. As you review each piece, ask yourself if you’ve worn it in the past year. If you haven’t, it’s time to say goodbye. Keep only the items that make you feel good, and consider donating those you no longer need.

Seasonal Organization: Keep Your Closet Fresh

When it comes to seasonal items, such as sweaters and coats, or shorts and tank tops, I recommend using a cedar chest (for wool socks and sweaters) or plastic bins in the attic or garage to store them away from your everyday space. You can rotate your wardrobe as needed, making it easier to access the items that are appropriate for the current season.

By organizing your closet in this way, you’ll maintain a sense of freshness and clarity throughout the year. It’s also a wonderful way to revisit your clothes and reassess your style each season.

Pro Tip: Do this closet reorganization at the start of each season. This keeps your closet organized and ensures that items you donate are always in season. If you still want to wear something but haven't set an intention to do so. I often place items I ‘intend’ to wear into my closet with the hanger facing out toward me. If it still hasn’t moved by the end of the season I pass it on to someone else who could benefit from it.

Creating a Purposeful and Peaceful Home

A clutter-free home isn’t just about getting rid of things—it’s about creating a space that reflects your true self. As you work through your belongings, you’ll discover a sense of freedom and purpose. You might even find things you forgot you had—things that bring you comfort or hold sentimental value.

Here’s how you can organize your chest of drawers for easy access to your clothes:

  • By Style – Keep casual wear separate from formal clothes.

  • By Color – Arrange clothes by color to make getting dressed easier.

  • By Occasion – Organize by the types of activities or events they’re suited for.

Personally, I like to keep my workout clothes—yoga and running gear—together in one drawer. This simple system ensures I can grab exactly what I need, when I need it.

Accountability is Key
Decluttering can be emotional, especially when it comes to sorting through and letting go of a loved one's clothing who may have moved on. Having an accountability partner can make a huge difference. I often take on this role for my clients, offering a neutral, supportive perspective as we navigate the process.

It’s like therapy for your home—and when you’re done, your space will feel lighter and more aligned with your goals.

The Power of Letting Go: Donate and Downcycle

One of the most rewarding aspects of decluttering is knowing that your items—whether clothes, books, or furniture—are going to someone who will cherish them. Donating is a wonderful way to give back, and you’ll feel great knowing that your belongings are being put to better use. Plus, it helps your home feel more spacious and peaceful.

Here are some excellent resources for donating and downcycling:

  • Local charities and shelters

  • Thrift stores

  • Community swap groups

  • Online donation platforms like your local: Buy Nothing Group

Remember: Organizing isn’t a one-time task. It’s an ongoing practice that requires regular maintenance. As you declutter and reorganize, make it a habit to return items to their designated spots. This consistency will help you maintain a practical and purposeful environment.

Declutter with Compassion: Organizing for Mental Peace

Decluttering isn't just a physical task; it's a mental one, too. It requires letting go of attachments, whether to material possessions or memories. Sometimes, stepping outside of yourself and looking at your space through a friend’s eyes can provide perspective. Would they think that shirt still suits you? Does that pair of shoes truly reflect your style? Often, it's easier to make decisions when we remove the emotional weight from the process.

It's Never Too Late to Start

As the saying goes, “The carpenter’s house is never finished.”  In acknowledgment of this, that’s why I started with my own home. In January, I spent time decluttering and organizing my space including my daughter’s room (with her permission, of course). It was both healing and transformative. We learned a lot about each other along the way, and it was a powerful bonding experience.
